This is a merbau paperweight modeled after architect
Seung Hyo-sang
work of the Muhakro Methodist Church in Hayang, North Gyeongsang Province, and this is a stationary vase that resembles the prayer room at the rooftop of the church.
Located in Hayang, a quiet town with the lovely meaning of “water sunshine,” the church built by the architect only spans over 50㎡.
The architect used the simplest forms possible to create a lucid space and added light in it.
The church makes us realize once again that there is nothing more mysterious than lucidity.
The lack of space within the church was supplemented with an outdoor chapel, which has become a place where residents frequently come and go to check on each other and the community.
The church is also a popular site constantly visited by lovers of architecture.
As you leave the church after looking around it, you will find a low-rise cultural space called “Water Sunshine” right in front of the church.
Built in a manner that respects the context of the church, this cultural space includes a “Water Sunshine Cafe,” a “Water Sunshine Gallery,” and a “Water Sunshine Bookstore.”
The cultural space is also where you can enjoy the spectacular scene of harmony between existing buildings embodying the traces of time and new buildings made of bricks and concrete, together with the trees, flowers, and flower bowls around them.
